Question #1: Rule: Answer:
      Can a Goaltender play with a broken stick? Rule 51(a,c) No the goaltender cannot play with a broken stick. He must drop the broken portions immediately and either legally obtain a stick from the bench or be legally handed a player's stick until the next whistle.
Question #2: Rule: Answer:
      Player A is checked from behind in such a manor that he hits the goal post head first and was not able to get his hands up to protect himself. SRD Rule 53(b) If the player being checked from behind is thrown violently into the boards or post, and cannot get his/her hands up to protect themselves, MATCH penalty, no question.
Question #3: Rule: Answer:
      Play is stopped in Team A's endzone by the goaltender. After the whistle there is a skirmish and you call three players on Team B for Roughing and two players on Team A for Roughing. Where is the face-off? Rule 57(f), Rule 57 Situation 19  If there are penalties assessed to both teams, whether the outcome is even or not, the faceoff takes place where the stoppage of play occurred. In this case, the end-zone spot.
Question #4: Rule: Answer:
      Shot from the point misses the net completely, bounces off the end boards and onto the back of the net. The Goaltender panics and covers the puck (still on the mesh) with his glove. Where is the face-off? Rule 75(c) Face-off is in the end-zone closest to where the goaltender froze the puck.
Question #5: Rule: Answer:
      Blue#2 is straddling the blue line trying to stay onside. Green#5 comes and gives him a push, causing an offside. Besides the obvious whistle for the offside, SRD Rule 66(a)(1) Minor Penalty to Green #5 for Interference.
Question #6: Rule: Answer:
      Blue Coach is enraged at a call, you are trying to ignore him. He opens the bench door, puts a foot on the ice and leans out to continue his tirade. SRD Rule 70(f) Coach is history, Game Misconduct.
Question #7: Rule: Answer:
      If the trainer comes out to tend to the Goalie, does the team have to put the backup in? Rule 20 Situation 4  No, so long as there is not an unreasonable delay.
Question #8: Rule: Answer:
      Player A is on his bench and grabs Player B's stick and rips it away. (player B is on the ice). SRD Rule 66(d)  Bench Minor + Game Misconduct if you are able to identify the player.
Question #9: Rule: Answer:
      Team A is crossing the attacking blueline on the rush. A27 falls and is lying on his belly, with body over the line, but feet in the neutral zone. Offside or Not? Rule 72 Situation 17  As long as his feet are in contact with the ice, no offside.
Question #10: Rule: Answer:
      A player is on a Penalty Shot and as he crosses the Blue Line, the Goaltender intentionally removes his helmet. SRD Rule 24 Situation 9  Award a Goal

      You have assessed Team A #2 - 5 min. Charging and Team A #8 - 2 min. Roughing (all at the same stoppage of play) How will this be recorded on the game sheet?   Use order of occurance
Question #12: Rule: Answer:
      A puck is shot by the attacking team and deflects off a defending player and then off the Referee and then into the Goal. SRD Rule 60(e)  The goal is disallowed, no goal shall be scored directly off the official.
Question #13: Rule: Answer:
      A27 scores a goal. Before the faceoff Team B complains that A27's helmet is not certified. SRD Rule 24 Situations 15, 26  The goal is allowed and the appropriate penalty is assessed to A27 (Rule 24 Situation 26). In this case, a minor penalty for wearing a non-certified helmet or facial protector should be assessed. However, the offending player shall not be permitted to take his place on the penalty bench until he has obtained a certified helmet. (Check out Rule 24 Situation 15 for more information.)
Question #14: Rule: Answer:
      Linesman notices that Team A has Too Many Men, but Team B has the puck. Does the Linesman blow the play down? If not, is there a signal he/she gives to signify the delayed penalty? Rule 42(b), Situation 3  Linesmen are to stop play when more than the correct number of players are on the ice, but must still follow the regular procedure for calling penalties. If the offending team has control of the puck, the Linesman shall stop play immediately; however, if the offending team does not have control, it then becomes a delayed call. In both situations, the Linesman must report the infraction to the Referee upon stoppage of play.

NOTE: There is NO signal that the Linesman should use in this delayed penalty situation (Rule 42 Situation 3).
Question #15: Rule: Answer:
      The puck is batted down by A5's hand, hits the shaft of his stick and goes into the opposing Goal. SRD Rule 61 Situation 5  The goal is allowed, as the puck touches the stick of the player last (Rule 61 Situation 5).
Question #16: Rule: Answer:
      In a league where time outs are permitted, Team A requests (and is granted) a time out. When the time out has expired and the teams have returned to the face off spot, Team B requests a time out. SRD Rule 84 (f) (Note 2) NO timeout is permitted. Both teams may take their respective time-outs during the same stoppage of play. However, once a team has called their time-out, the second team must indicate their intentions to take a time-out during the same stoppage of play before the initial 30 seconds are over.
Question #17: Rule: Answer:
      The Referee has a delayed penalty on Team A. Play is deep in Team A's end, and Team B pulls their goaltender. En-route to the bench and over the center red line (both skates and stick), the goaltender plays the puck. The goaltender has not yet been substituted for. SRD Rule37 Rule 37(e) The goaltender shall be assessed a Minor penalty, and the initial penalty on delay is called as usual. Play is stopped as soon as the goaltender plays the puck over the center red line.
Question #18: Rule: Answer:
      Team B #71 has been assessed a 10-minute misconduct in her attacking zone after there has been a stoppage of play in that zone. Where is the face-off? Rule 57 Situation 14 The face-off will take place at the nearest face-off spot in the neutral zone.
Question #19: Rule: Answer:
      A player has one skate above the blue line (over top, but not touching) and one skate over the blue line at the instant that the puck completely crosses the blue line. SRD Rule 72 Situation 3  Offside.
Question #20: Rule: Answer:
      Team "A" shoots the puck from behind the centre red line so as to constitute a possible icing call. A player of Team "A" who is on-side and eligible to play the puck, attempts to do so in the opposing team's end, before icing occurs. The goaltender of Team "B" shoots a portion of a broken stick so as to interfere with the puck. What penalty is assessed? Rule 66 Situation 2  Allow play to be completed, and assess the goaltender a Minor penalty for interference.
Question #21: Rule: Answer:
      In Minor or Female Hockey, player A #14 injures another player with a punch. What penalty(ies) are assessed? Rule 59(b) Note 2  A #14 is assessed a Major penalty for roughing and a Game Misconduct. There is no indication of any intent to injure, so there is no Match Penalty in this case.

      Red Team #20 in the attacking zone shoots the puck which rebounds off the shinpads of a Blue Team player in his defending zone. The puck is then picked up by another Blue Team player over the center red line who crossed the red line (both skates and stick) before the puck. SRD Rule 73 Situation 15 NO OFF-SIDE PASS

Rule 28 Situation 15 a) B16 is released from the penalty box upon the scoring of the goal, as he is the only player serving a time penalty.

b) A goal was scored while B24 was serving his first minor. This minor is then cancelled, and B24 can now expect to be released at the first whistle after 4:31.
Question #24: Rule: Answer:
      What are the dimensions (diameter, thickness, and weight if you're keen) of an official puck? Rule 26 Dimensions of an official puck:
    3" diameter by 1" thick,
    Weight between 5.5 and 6 oz.
Question #25: Rule: Answer:
      The attacking team (in their attacking zone) high-sticks the puck while on the power play. According to the rules used by YOUR association, where does the face-off take place? Rule 62(d) According to all districts of the CHA, the face-off takes place at the nearest neutral zone face-off spot.
Question #26: Rule: Answer:
      The puck is shot by a North Bay player behind her blue line. A potential icing is signalled by the back Linesman. A Burnaby player is within 10 feet of her player's bench, and her substitute comes onto the ice as the puck passes within reach of these two players. Playing the puck would constitute a Bench Minor penalty for too many men. The Burnaby players make no attempt to play the puck in this situation, with the puck continuing on down over the goal line.

Is icing called, or is it waved off because the Burnaby player could have played the puck?
Rule 65 Situation 19 (Word for word)
NO ICING. The team shooting the puck (North Bay) should not be penalized because a line change was being made.
Question #27: Rule: Answer:
      A player hand-passes the puck from the neutral zone to a teammate that has his skates INSIDE his own blue line, but picks the puck up just outside the blue line. SRD Rule 61 Situation 7
Blow the play down because of a hand pass. If the player receiving the puck had received the puck INSIDE his own blue line (the position of the puck being the determining factor), then play would continue.
Question #28: Rule: Answer:
      Team A is serving a Major penalty, and the Referee has his arm up for a delayed Minor penalty against Team A. Team B scores. SRD   "The minor penalty on delay is washed out. You can consider it as just being assessed for the purpose of asking the two questions: Are they shorthanded? Yes. Are they serving a minor penalty? Yes. Therefore the minor is terminated."
Question #29: Rule: Answer:
      There's a close play at the net, and players from behind the net accidentally tip the net forward such that the net is STILL ON ITS MOORINGS but is angled forward. The attacking team scores a goal while the net is in this position, and the net quickly falls back into the proper position. Goal or No Goal?   "No goal can be scored when the net is displaced."
Question #30: Rule: Answer:
      Team A shoots the puck at the goal of Team B. The puck enters the net but immediately bounces out again without the Referee seeing the goal. The Referee suspects there may have been a goal scored but allows play to continue. Before the first stoppage of play, the Referee sees Team B commit an infraction calling for a minor penalty, and so when Team B gains possession and control of the puck, he stops play and calls a minor penalty against Team B. At this stoppage of play the Referee checks with his Linesmen to find out if a goal was scored. One of them saw the puck enter the net. SRD   Unknown!
Question #31: Rule: Answer:
      The puck is shot by either an attacking or defending player and hits an official. After hitting the official, the puck hits the boards then rebounds into the goal. SRD Rule 60 Situation 4
The goal counts.
Question #32: Rule: Answer:
      Can a player kick a stick that is on the ice back to his goaltender or another teammate without being assessed a penalty? Rule 82 Situation 4
Yes - provided the kicked stick does not interfere with the play or an opposing player. (This rule is consistent with the guidelines for shooting a stick back to ta teammate as described in Rule 51, Situation 7).
Question #33: Rule: Answer:
      What four situations would result in a penalty shot for delay of game in the last two minutes of regulation time? Rule 35 Situation 2(5) A penalty shot shall be awarded when, in the last two miutes of regular playing time, a team is penalized for:
  • Deliberate illegal substitution (19(f));
  • Deliberately removing a helmet or facial protector (24(c));
  • Deliberately knocking the goal from its position (55(c));
  • Refusing to start play (78(a)).
